Homework for April 8

For the segment called "That Little Thing Called 'Like'", I found the most interesting part to be about the "like" being as friendly. The people try to relate the "like" button to a casual conversation between two women about complementing each other's shoes or a new haircut. Then it goes deeper saying friendliness is like primates grooming one another. I think people should know about this because these things are similar. Even if people don't think "liking" something as being friendly, when you "like" something your friends can find out about it, and they probably like it too.

For the segment called "Our Privacy Delusions",the thing that stood out to me was that anyone could  access your information even without a warrant. I never realized e-mails over six months old were subject to seizure without a warrant. Also, e-mails never sent never actually go away with a delete button. I think this is very important information because it can help people be more cautious of what they e-mail to other people and who can find out about it.

For the segment called "How to Sort Good Information From Bad on Twitter", there was lot of really interesting things to help out your social media image. Following city agencies is a great idea for someone to be in the loop with their city, town, county, state, and country, but finding the people with accurate, reliable information is the hard part. It is a good idea to just drop someone once they have been unreliable just once.

For the segment called "Facebook's New Social Search", I think Tom Scott did a good job at explaining how this filter works. It is so detailed and you can search anything about anybody. He demonstrated how powerful this new search technology is by posting a blog of his searches. Some of them were to "unsettling" for him to share with the world. I think this is a very important reminder to people about how they use the internet and what they put out there for people to see. It's a wake-up call.

For the last segment called "Facebook V. Europe", I think the most interesting thing was the pile of information  Max Schrems gets from Facebook about himself. He helped advocate for more privacy and more consents to be done on Facebook to protect users. This is also a wake-up call for people who use Facebook. All the information out there about you is astounding and abundant.

I think "The Little Thing Called 'Like'" and "Our Privacy Delusions" are related in the sense of privacy is important. The users of Facebook are having trouble keeping their privacy and some need help. Some people believe that when you "like" something, nobody else knows unless they search for it. However, everyone knows. Then it becomes an issue of privacy. You think you are protected, but really you're not.

In-Class blog post #10

I can apply the research skills to my major classes. I'm going into nursing, and these skills can help me do research if I need to. I can use the informaiton I've learned about the library databases for other research into any other classes as well. Also I cn use the research tips for any of my English classes I may take that require research to be done. I feel as if I have learned a lot in this class to help me succeed in my future.
I can apply these skills to real life by looking up facts and finding good information before I state it to someone. I will also apply the database skills to my career. I can search for new innovative ways to take care of patients - young or old. It can also help with searching for things to help with non-traditional remedies or things such as that.
I'm very grateful for taking this class. I know it will help me a lot in the future for research.

Annotated Bibliography

An annotated bibliography is a list of sources, such as books, magazines, articles, websites, etc., with a short summary about the source and a few sentences about how good the source is and how it helps in your research. So you will have a citation, then a few sentences summary, and a few sentences talking about how the source contributed to your research.

You are requiring us to write one of these because it will help us think about our sources and to really look into what we are researching. The information included will also help anyone who reads our research paper.

This can help me in my research project by requiring me to look and think about the sources I read. It will allow me to follow my topic closely and can help redefine my research question to be as specific as possible. The annotated bibliography can help in many ways to help me create the best research project possible.

In Class Blog #8

Special collections is a library of old historical things. It has mostly primary sources - some from people that were famous, some form people who were not famous. It has many things relating to local history, Georgia history, and much more. You can find old books, newspapers, photos, scholarly journals, family histories, etc. I could use the primary sources of Special Collections to find old books on guns and how they were used. I could also find out about how guns were made and the types of people that owned guns and how they were acquired. What type of processes did people have to go through to become a gun owner. I could answer questions relating to gun ownership and how that has changed to recent times. It can give me some history into previous gun control laws and what the people of the time thought about them.

in class blog #7

I used PsycInfo. This database is similar to Academic Search Complete in the formatting. I used many terms to search in this database. Mostly I used "gun control and background checks" but I did use "firearms and background checks". I found lots of good information researching the new laws on background checks and ability of mentally ill patients to own firearms. I would use this database in looking for information that has been studied and has lots of time in research done over the subject.
The other database I used was Criminal Justice Periodical Index. The layout is very different from Academic Search Complete. This database had less research type entries than PsycInfo. This database had news articles about things that are happening in different places in the United States. I searched "gun control and background checks" but that yielded no usable results. So I tried "right to carry". These results were better than the first terms I tried. I would use this database for support of my claims in my paper. I could do my own analyzing of this type of information.
The filters were very similar. I do prefer to use PsycInfo.

I think that bubble filters are bad. I agree with the Ted talk about it limiting our views. It keeps us in a tight bubble and doesn't allow our minds to expand or be challenged. Filter bubbles could inhibit my research by limiting what I'm exposed to. If the filters affect what I can and can't see, I might be missing something that could be important to my topic. I could also receive irrelevant results which do not help at all. I like the filter bubble suggestions. I think they are very useful and can help me make my results more relevant. I have already tried some of the suggestions and I believe that they have helped me search for better things and help me expand my mind. I hope the rest of the suggestions will help me even more as I continue my research.

1. Journals are one type of information source. You can find very up-to-date information in the journals. They are likely to have some research in them. They are published periodically. This is a scholarly source because it contains a great deal of useful information. I could use this to answer a research question because the information is current and reliable.

2. Books are another type of information source. Non-fiction books are very useful in searching for fact about a person or place. They will have some degree of research in them to be facts and statistics. They are usually published once and only once but sometimes there are different editions of books to be found. Non-fiction is a scholarly source because of the research and intelligent information. I could use this type of source when researching the history of guns and background checks. This could also help when looking for people who could represent my topic.

3. Magazines are another type of information source. The information is current but has little to no research behind it. They are published periodically. This is a popular source because of the color pictures, little to no research, and the easy to read language. I could find minimal information to use in my research from magazines.

4. Interviews are another type of information source. The information is first person and can be useful. It probably has little research behind it. It is usually published once. This can be both scholarly or popular. I could use this information if it is scholarly and uses research.

Research Question

My research question is "What are the background check laws and how do they affect gun ownership?" This question relates to my group topic of gun control. I developed this question kind of based off my major of nursing. However, not much with nursing and gun control went together. So I thought of mental health checks for gun ownership, but I could not find much on that. I did find quite a bit of stuff on background checks before a gun purchase. I found out much more information on my presearch that helped develop my research question. The two positions I can take on my research is the pros and cons of background checks or I can take on the laws and the effects of the law before it was in place and after it was in place. I think this is a good question because I can find a lot of information on the laws and the effects of the laws on how and where many people buy their guns. Some felons may have friends that can buy them guns even if they know it is illegal. I have a lot of hope for my topic and my question.

I will be able to take the scholarly research into my field of study which is nursing. I can use this to help me develop new techniques to helping patients and assisting doctors. I can research new ways to help people. Research can also benefit me in learning how to better understand my patients and co-workers. There are new medical advancements everyday especially in the field of nursing. I hope to show my patients my caring attitude, and my abilities to keep their care as comfortable and efficient as possible. I can also use the evaluation criteria when doing research in my nursing classes to help me determine good sources for my research for my patients' care.
I can take plagiarism into all of my academic classes to help me not plagiarize. No college professor wants their students to plagiarize anything because it is dishonest. Also I could get kicked out of school for plagiarism. This is a big deal in all classes and is taken very seriously.
I can also take logical fallacies into my English classes because when writing a paper, I don't want to use one of these and be discredited for my work. I hope to never encounter that. Logical fallacies can apply everywhere and I hope to keep them out of my work.

Annotation Feb. 6

Hemenway, David. Private Guns, Public Health. Ann Arbor: University of Michigan Press, 2004. Print.

This book talks about how guns affect our lives in many aspects. It also has statistics about gun use in different environments and by different people. This source is credible because it is moderately recent, all of the cited sources are credible, and he is a credible person. The information is relavant to my topic, and very useful. This helps me answer my question by providing information about guns and health. It talks about how guns affect the public health system and individuals that has psychiatric illnesses.

In class Blog #4

My experience with the UWG catalog was much different than my experience in high school. There are many more books in the library at this college than in my high school. I went to a fairly small high school so there were not many books to choose from in the catalog called Safari. The keywords bring up different things as well. With more books, you can use many different keywords. This has been one of the biggest differences. The UWG also has more features to narrow your search down to find books that better suit your topic or what you're looking for. At a public library, they have many books but still not as many as UWG. Their system of looking up books is also different from UWG and high school.

I did have trouble finding books on my specific topic. Since gun control is so new, it was difficult to find information about mental health and guns. I really didn't find any new tricks to use that could help me very much. I really hope to learn more about this system for finding books in the UWG library.

Two Books

I found two books in the library that seemed like it could fit my topic of gun control and mental health. However, I found one book to be very unhelpful. The first book I looked at was Can Gun Control Work? by James B. Jacobs. This book was mostly about gun control and not really related to mental health. This book had much more to do with gun laws than mental health. I found this book to not be useful for my topic.

The second book I found was Private Guns Public Health by David Hemenway. This book had some information about suicides and homicides which can tie into mental health. However, this is not exactly what I was looking for. I could use this information to answer my research question by using some of the statistics. It has some information about what types of people commit suicide the most. People with psychiatric issues and drug abuse issues are most likely to commit suicide. This information is very useful in determining if guns should be sold to individuals with these such issues. It's a very controversial topic.

The evaluation criteria I used was the relevancy of the information in the book to my research question. If the information didn't give some light into answering my question then I determined the book was irrelevant. Some of the information I found was very irrelevant.

In class blog post #3

Our topic is about gun control. This is based on an article about Arkansas letting concealed weapons into churches. I am interested in this topic because my fiance and I are talking about buying guns for our house. He is very interested in hunting. Also, being in public, you don't know who may be about to shoot you so having a concealed weapon is for your own protection as well as the protection of others around you. I approach this from a nursing point of view because I am a nursing major. I can see the mental health side when purchasing a gun. Mental health evaluations are a big topic of debate currently, and I think i can make that fit with my major.

In class blog #2

When I am in a conversation and someone else tries to jump in, I first look at their appearance. If he or she looks like someone who is knowledgeable, I will listen to that person for a bit. If I find they don't look knowledgeable, I get more curious as to what they have to say. I will listen to someone for a while and then form a more informed opinion about their opinions and knowledge. If they say something that I know is incorrect, I will correct them politely. If they still disagree with the facts, then I'll just walk away and ignore them completely. I don't like to do that, but I know my facts and don't like to argue with someone who is ignorant. If they do say some things that I agree with or that I know to be true, I'll listen more closely and include them in my conversation.

I feel as if I'm being too judgemental toward other people when I do this, but I don't want to argue facts with someone who is too stubborn to change his or her opinion. If I am talking about something basic chemistry related, I am probably right in my facts because I just studied basic chemistry. I will do the same thing if I jump into someone elses conversations. I may say something that is wrong and someone can feel free to correct me. I'll just say "Okay, I was wrong. I'm sorry. I'll try harder to get my facts correct."

Research Project

My favorite research project was in my junior year of high school. Mr. Bilski, my teacher, had us research a vacation and the cost of the entire vacation. I used the internet mostly for the project. I used sites like Expedia.com and travelocity.com. We had class time to use a computer lab which cut down on the homework time. My place of vacation was Paris. I chose Paris because it has many fun things to do and lots of yummy food to eat. I calculated the price of the flight, hotel, transportation, food, sight-seeing events, and souvenirs. It was presented in a paper format, standard MLA with a bibliography. I made a very good grade on that assignment and had lots of fun while researching. It was my favorite research project because I got to be imaginative about where in the world I wanted to travel.

RYT Hospital-Dwayne Medical Center CRAP

I decided to look at RYT Hospital-Dwayne Medical Center's website. Upon my first inspection of the website, I was taken aback a little by the first claim of the first human male pregnancy. This website is not very good. I used the CRAP test to show that this website is bad/bogus. The site does not have a date anywhere on it. I cannot tell how recent this information is. This source does not include much information. There are definitely no quotes or other resources on this site. I only found one author. His name is Dr. Phineas Liu. There are no advertisements, but I did manage to talk to an "intelligent" mouse. (That was odd.) This site is biased. It wants audience to believe in things that are prove to not be true.

About Me

Hello, I'm Emily Hardin. I'm from Villa Rica, Ga. I decided to come to UWG because it is close to my home and has one of the best nursing programs. I am a commuter student so it is pretty convenient for me to go to UWG. My parents are both disabled and older so I feel
better if I can go home to them and help take care of them on a daily basis.

I've wanted to be a nurse for as long as I can remember. I hope to one day have a master's degree and work with kids either in a hospital or in a doctors office. I feel like it is my destiny to help children.

For this class, I hope to learn about research and writing. I don't feel as if my writings are good enough for college classes. I want to improve with researching as well. I've never been very good at that.
